MRS ARMITAGE AND THE BIG WAVE

GaGa Theatre's Mrs Armitage and the Big Wave, based on the book by Quentin Blake, opens today at the Abbey Theatre in St Albans. I have written lots of music for it, and the lovely design is by Verity Quinn, who also designed Under the Rainbow.

SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL

I have just finished composing the music for Polka Theatre's new production Shake Rattle and Roll, which is part of their Brain Waves festival. Devised and directed by Sarah Argent, this show has been made with the assistance of the clever boffins from the Baby Lab at Birkbeck University, exploring babies' behaviour.

Julian Butler Theatre Composer
The show is beautifully trippy, and runs for the next month. You can listen to, or download, my soundtrack right here.

Meanwhile, Gorilla opens at West Yorkshire Playhouse next month, and Red Riding Hood plays in New York for Christmas.

WILDERNESS FESTIVAL

I am off to Wilderness Festival this week, where I will be performing a solo David Bowie singalong from Thursday to Sunday at 6pm. I'll be bashing out all the hits, from Let's Dance to Kooks to Space Oddity, so if you're heading up to Oxford this weekend, do pop in.

I have also written the music for Under the Rainbow, a brand new Polka Theatre show, which will premiere at the festival on Friday.
Julian Butler Theatre Composer
The soundtrack for Under the Rainbow is available to listen to, or to download, right here.

UNDER THE RAINBOW

I have just finished writing the music for Under the Rainbow, which premieres at the Wilderness Festival in Oxford this August.

The show is being devised and directed by Peter Glanville, and will return to London in 2017 for a run at Polka Theatre.
Julian Butler Theatre Composer
It's another through-composed piece, utilising music and instruments from the Middle East, telling the story of a refugee who finds a magical island paradise. If you're wondering what that might sound like, look no further: the soundtrack is available to listen to, or to download, right here.

I will be at Wilderness, performing a solo David Bowie singalong for four nights, which I'm very excited about. Just deciding which songs to do...

I'm off to Spain for the week, to recover. When I get back, it's straight into rehearsals for Under the Rainbow, which premieres at the Wilderness Festival in three weeks' time. I'll also be there, performing a solo David Bowie tribute. More about that later.

It's a cracking show, based on stories written by local children. Lots of magical lands, monsters, blood, guts and mayhem. If you fancy coming to see it, it's recommended for 7+ years, and opens on 22nd April.

The show has been nominated for an Off West End Theatre Award: Best Production for Young People 2016.

NEVERLAND

My new musical, Neverland, opens at Lakeside Arts in Nottingham this week, featuring a book, music and lyrics by me. The soundtrack is available to listen to here.

The story is loosely based on JM Barrie's Peter Pan, and has been directed by Martin Berry, who, in a daft show of support, jumped out of a plane to raise money for Great Ormond Street at the weekend. Great Ormond Street, as you may or may not know, get royalties every time Peter Pan is produced.

Anyhow, Neverland has a load of brand new songs in it, including this one...

I have been working on it on and off for the past two years. It's on all over Christmas, and you can buy tickets for it right here.

Julian Butler Theatre Composer
In the meantime, Beauty and the Beast is going great guns at Polka Theatre. The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse appears to be going well on tour. The Paper Dolls opens at the New Wolsey in Ipswich this Tueday. Red Riding Hood is touring the USA until May 2016, including performances with a live orchestra. Charlie and Lola is currently in Hong Kong. The musical version of Beauty and the Beast I wrote with Mike Kenny has just finished a run in Canada, and I'm off to Bermuda in the New Year with Me and My Cat?.
